The prairies

The central States of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are known like the prairies region. Manitoba has a great variety of landscapes with tens of lakes, rivers, plains and marshes. Its capital is Winnipeg, a city located between the Red and Assibibone rivers. Still conserves many buildings that remember the time of the skin retailers, like the Old Grant's mill, the houses of Seven Oaks and Ross and the only remaining door of the Upper Garry Fort, constructed in 1863 by the Hudson Bay Company.

Winnipeg enjoys an active cultural life with a stable supply of dance, theatre, ballet, symphonic orchestras and opera. From the capital of Manitoba we can make different excursions to know the natural richness of the region. It is possible to visit the Winnipeg lake, the locality of Steinbach, with its streets and buildings of Mennonite origin, and the Spruce Woods provincial park, with its impressive dunes and grass covered plains. Regina is the capital of Saskatchewan whose centre is an immense park that surrounds an artificial lake where is the Trafalgar fountain, brought from London in 1939.

Another of the important cities of the region is Saskatoon (in the Saskatchewan river borders). The locality expands by numerous meanders of the river connected by seven bridges. The city can be known making cruises by the river. Alberta is an extensive agricultural zone also rich in oil and gas. The greater attractive here are the Rocky Mountains, a mountain range that separates the States of Alberta and British Columbia. This mountain range is divided into four zones: the Banff National Park, the Waterton and Jasper lakes National Parks and the zone of Kananaskis.

In the Banff National Park, the oldest of Canada, are sulphurous thermal waters; next to the city of Banff one the Upper Hot Spring bathering resort and a cableway that ascends to the top of the Sulphur mountain, where is a viewpoint from where to enjoy the landscape. The National Park of Jasper is the northernmost of the Rocky Mountains. It is less visited by the tourists, but organized excursions can be arranged from the city of Jasper to know the lake Beauvert, the mount Robson -the highest peak of the Rockies-, and the Maligen valley. Calgary is the more American city of all Canada. From its origins only remains the Heritage park, because at the present it’s filled with skyscrapers and financial centres, arisen from the operation of its rich oil wells discovered in 1947.
